That pitiful little expression was just short of saying, “You two are only busy playing around and not paying any attention to me at all.”

Jiang Libai turned her head to look and almost burst out laughing. “Look at her, when we try to comfort her, she cries so sadly. But when we stop, she suddenly stops crying too.”

As she spoke, she gently tapped Xingxing’s chubby little cheek with her finger. “You really are a little tsundere!”

Xingxing didn’t understand what her mother was saying, but seeing the smile on her mother’s face and feeling the warmth of her hand caressing her cheek, she thought her mother was playing with her. Instantly, she grinned happily.

—

Seeing that it was getting late, it was time to wash up and rest.

Jiang Libai picked up Xingxing, preparing to hand her over to the wet nurse waiting outside.

Gu Yun stayed by her side, carefully protecting both mother and daughter. When they reached the door, she unlatched it and stepped ahead to open it, then quietly retreated into a corner, hiding her figure in the shadows.

The wet nurse waiting outside heard the movement and, with keen awareness, lowered her head and quickly stepped forward. With gentle movements, she took the soft and warm little princess from the Seventh Princess’s arms.

The lanterns burned brightly, and the night was intoxicatingly serene.

Watching the wet nurse and her group leave, Jiang Libai relaxed her brows, turned around, and walked back inside.

Under the soft orange glow, she saw Gu Yun standing behind the door and couldn’t help but laugh. “What are you doing standing there? Looking so pitiful, as if I didn’t let you come inside.”

The girl’s bright smile made Gu Yun pause for a moment. Then, in one swift motion, she wrapped her arms around Jiang Libai’s slender waist and gave her a gentle pat on her perky bottom. “You’re the one to talk! I haven’t been outside in so long, I can barely remember what the outside world looks like.”

Seeing the girl’s face flush red, she switched from patting to gently kneading and said in a soft voice, “Princess, how much longer until I am ‘fully recovered’?”

These past few days, the arson case had nothing to do with her anymore. Now, all the court’s attention was focused on the people from Yun Nation, and they had nearly forgotten about her, the poisoned Seventh Prince Consort.

She wondered, in this situation, could she quietly ‘recover’?

“It’ll take a little longer.” Jiang Libai, feeling embarrassed, grabbed Gu Yun’s misbehaving hand.

Even though she and Gu Yun had done all sorts of intimate things before, getting her bottom patted like this… was still so embarrassing!

But Gu Yun, still lingering in the warmth of her palm, was reluctant to let go. Instead, she bent down, lifted the Seventh Princess into her arms, and carried her to the bed, settling her sideways on her lap.

“Then how much longer?”

Her dry voice now carried a hint of something deeper, slow and sultry, like snow melting on a mountaintop and forming a stream that trickled gently across Jiang Libai’s heart.

“The Ministry of Justice says the poisoner was from Yun Nation, but I just can’t shake this uneasy feeling. I think you should wait a little longer before you ‘recover.’ At least until this whole situation dies down—then it won’t be too late for you to appear again.”

At such a turbulent time, even though the suspicion surrounding Gu Yun had been cleared, Jiang Libai was still worried that something unexpected might happen and drag Gu Yun back into trouble.

Seeing that the Seventh Princess didn’t want her to take any risks, Gu Yun didn’t argue and dropped the subject.

As the night deepened, a cool breeze slipped through the cracks in the windows, carrying the first hints of autumn’s chill.

“Princess, the day after tomorrow is your birthday, isn’t it?” After tucking Jiang Libai into bed, Gu Yun lay beside her on the same soft pillow.

The Seventh Princess’s birthday was on the tenth of the eighth month. Today was already the eighth, so the day was fast approaching. The ring Gu Yun had been working on still wasn’t ready, but the hairpin was nearly finished. If she worked on it diligently over the next two days, she should be able to complete it in time.

Jiang Libai pursed her cherry lips, and beneath her long, feathery eyelashes, her moist, bright eyes sparkled like the stars in the sky—dazzling and captivating.

“Yes, the day after tomorrow is my birthday.”

She still remembered how Gu Yun had asked her before what kind of birthday gift she wanted. She wondered… what would Gu Yun give her?

But with everything that had happened—the arson case, Gu Yun’s imprisonment, and all the lost time—had she still managed to prepare a gift for her?

Inside the room, the candlelight flickered gently, casting shifting shadows onto the gauzy bed curtains. The silhouettes inside became hazy and indistinct.

Jiang Libai reached out and lightly touched Gu Yun’s sharp chin. Then, seeing the subtle shift in Gu Yun’s gaze, she giggled softly and asked, “So, what birthday present are you going to give me?”

The faint glow of the candlelight seeped through the thin curtains, illuminating the Seventh Princess’s delicate face. Her trembling lashes cast a small shadow on her cheeks, and the flickering light danced upon them like little forest sprites—so enchanting it nearly stole one’s breath away.

Gu Yun had seen the Seventh Princess’s beauty in different moments and expressions, yet she still felt that no matter when she looked at her, she would always be captivated by her charm, unwilling to shift her gaze for even a moment…

When the candle flame burned out, she lifted the Seventh Princess’s delicate chin, and her thin lips slowly pressed down toward those trembling, crow-feather-like eyelashes.

“I’ll tell you when the time comes.” After the kiss ended, her heated lips parted slightly, responding vaguely before slowly moving downward to capture those soft, pink lips.

The night was still long, and the warmth inside the room was quietly blooming…

—

In the darkness of the night, some slept entwined, while others lay awake, unable to find rest.

In a room without a lit lamp, two indistinct figures sat facing each other in silence throughout the long night.

After a long time, a gentle yet sharp voice rang out, “Next, just continue according to the plan.”

The shadow of a man swayed slightly, then bowed his head and answered, “Yes.”

The next day.

On a morning bathed in golden sunlight, the chirping of birds awakened Jiang Libai and Gu Yun from their deep sleep.

The two lazed in bed for quite some time, unwilling to get up, until Chunxi, urging them repeatedly, finally got them out of bed.

When the door opened and a few young maids entered carrying washing utensils, they remained disciplined, their heads lowered, not daring to glance around recklessly.

Jiang Libai yawned lazily, took the towel Chunxi handed her, and wiped her face. Just as she was about to rinse her mouth, she noticed Chunxi’s hesitant expression from the corner of her eye.

Her drowsiness instantly faded. While washing her fingers, she asked Chunxi, “What’s the matter?”

Since the Seventh Princess had asked directly, Chunxi observed her expression before finally lowering her voice to whisper what had happened the previous night.

“…Those Yun Kingdom escapees refused to give up. They disguised themselves and infiltrated the Third Prince’s manor and the Fifth Prince’s palace… It all happened so suddenly—both the Third and Fifth Princes were gravely injured. Fortunately, they were discovered in time, and the Third Prince’s life was barely saved. However, the Fifth Prince…”

What?!

Jiang Heng and Jiang Wei were both attacked? Such a major event happened last night?!

And from Chunxi’s words, Jiang Wei’s life was in danger?!

“What happened to the Fifth Prince?!”

Chunxi hesitated for a long time before cautiously speaking. “The Fifth Prince lost too much blood… The imperial physicians have been stationed at Qixiang Hall for hours, but no news has come out yet. So… so, this servant isn’t sure whether the Fifth Prince will…”

In truth, Chunxi had already softened her words.

Last night, when Jiang Wei was ambushed, the assassin drove a dagger into his left chest. Not only did he lose an excessive amount of blood, but the blade’s placement was extremely dangerous—just a finger’s width away from piercing his heart…

That was what made the imperial physicians feel so helpless.

“Princess! Please don’t worry too much. Right now, no news is the best news…” Chunxi feared that the Seventh Princess would be overwhelmed by the sorrow of her husband’s uncertain recovery while also worrying about her younger brother’s life. She quickly supported her.

Jiang Libai was in a great panic. Without even having breakfast, she ordered Mu Jiang to prepare a carriage for the palace.

She hurried back to her chamber, briefly informing the still-languishing Gu Yun about Jiang Wei’s situation before hastily departing for the palace.

Since Jiang Wei had yet to come of age or marry, he still resided in the palace.

By logic, the palace was heavily guarded, especially the residences of the princes, with layers upon layers of security. How could assassins sneak in and succeed in their attack?!

This was a blatant disregard for the imperial guards!

Both anxious and furious, Jiang Libai had only just reached the palace gates when an attendant came to lead her to Qixiang Hall.

By now, it was already noon, nearly time for lunch. As soon as she stepped inside, she spotted her mother consort.

“Mother Consort, how is Xiao Wu’s condition?”

Consort Yuan had been keeping vigil here for most of the night, yet no word had been sent out. She was utterly exhausted.

Rubbing her temples, her eyes were filled with unconcealable sorrow.

“The imperial physicians have yet to come out…” But not wanting to appear weak before her daughter, she forced herself to straighten up, pulling the corners of her lips into a barely visible smile. “But Xiao Wu has always been strong. As long as they stop the bleeding, he should be fine…”

Jiang Libai was startled by the paleness on her mother’s face. She quickly stepped forward and grasped her mother’s hand.

The ice-cold touch in her palm made her heart ache.

“Mother Consort, you’ve been keeping watch over Xiao Wu for a long time now, haven’t you?” She brought those hands to her lips, gently breathing warm air over them in an attempt to warm them up.

“Go and rest for a while. I will stay here with Xiao Wu. If there is any news, I will have Chunxi deliver it to Changchun Palace immediately, alright?”

Consort Yuan shook her head and turned to look at the tightly shut doors of the inner chamber. The worry in her eyes was impossible to hide.

“Mother Consort.” Jiang Libai sighed softly, coaxing her distressed mother. “You said it yourself—Xiao Wu will be fine. So please, go and rest to regain your strength, alright?”

“Xiao Wu and I are both waiting for you, strong and full of spirit, to shield us from the storms…”

Finally, after Jiang Libai’s repeated persuasion, Consort Yuan agreed to return and rest for a while.

This allowed Jiang Libai to breathe a sigh of relief. After escorting her weary mother away, she turned back inside and listened quietly as Chunxi, who had gone to gather information, reported back.

However, there wasn’t much more detail beyond what had already been said that morning.

She closed her eyes and continued waiting for news from the inner chamber.

—

By late afternoon, the exhausted but clear-eyed imperial physicians finally stepped out of the room.

What followed was the long-awaited good news: the Fifth Prince was no longer in mortal danger.

“…The Fifth Prince was injured near his heart and lost a great deal of blood. Although he has been saved, he will need careful recuperation, and…”

Before the physician could finish, he hesitated, choosing not to speak further in front of so many people.

“What else besides careful recuperation?” Jiang Libai pressed.

The physician glanced around, and Jiang Libai understood his meaning. She immediately waved away the palace maids and eunuchs in the hall.

“Having suffered such a severe injury, the Fifth Prince’s body has been greatly weakened. I fear he may be left with lasting complications…”

At those words, Jiang Libai’s face turned deathly pale in an instant.

Complications… That meant Xiao Wu’s health might never fully recover?

“He’s only sixteen, still young and strong—how can he not recover?!”

The physician knew that the Seventh Princess might find this hard to accept, just as she had struggled to accept the dire condition of the Seventh Prince Consort’s poisoning before.

With that in mind, he feared she might not withstand another heavy blow and softened his words. “It is only a possibility. If he is carefully nursed back to health, he may very well regain his former strength…”

The physician’s words echoed in Jiang Libai’s mind, pounding at her heart, leaving her feeling utterly unsettled.

She closed her eyes and dismissed the physician with a wave of her hand.

After seeing Jiang Wei lying in bed, bandaged and unconscious, Jiang Libai’s gaze turned cold. She turned on her heels and strode out of Qixiang Hall.
